Rust Belt Lights, Still Rings True and Maker are currently out on tour together, and we’re lucky enough to be sponsors! So, we caught up recently with Rust Belt Light’s vocalist, Zach, and asked him a few questions about life on the road.
FYPP: What do you guys do to keep yourselves occupied on long drives?
RBL: On past tours, we would mostly just stare at each other and try not to explode from boredom. But this time around we have a TV hooked up with a ps3 so now we stare at that instead. I’m a borderline smartphone addict so I mostly tweet, blog, Facebook, etc on behalf of the band to pass the time. Oh, that and get four loko’d.
FYPP: What has been your favourite city to play in so far and why?
RBL: This is very cliche but it’s impossible to pick one city that is hands down our favorite. Our favorite places to play are the places where our friends in other bands live. We stayed with the dudes from Legend Has It last night in Bangor, Maine. It’s seriously heartwarming to see dudes we’ve toured with in the past and just kick it with them like we’ve known each other forever.
FYPP: Who does most of the late night driving?
RBL: Cody K does most of the late night driving. He’s legitimately nocturnal at this point. It’s 4:55pm right now and he hasn’t woken up for the day yet. The dude is VERY good at driving through the night, even if it’s a 12 hour drive or something inhumane like that.
FYPP: What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you guys on tour? Not just this tour, any tour?
RBL: I’m sure something weirder than this has happened, but off of the top of my head, one story comes to mind. On tour with Take It Back and Boys No Good, we ended up at a casino in Detroit. None of us were doing particularly well, when all of a sudden, our guitar player Tom walks up to the roulette table. He had never played the game before. So it’s Tom and this empty shell of an older woman, together at the table. The woman placed her chips on like 25 different numbers across the entire board, while Tom put a solitary $20 chip on 17 black, essentially for the fuck of it. Sure enough, the little marble lands on 17 black. Lady loses several dollars, Tom wins $700 in one shot, having never played the game before. Hasn’t played since!
FYPP: What are you guys listening to in the van?
RBL: This tour, we’ve been listening to The Stereo State’s new full length, ‘Have All My Friends Gone Deaf?’ It’s extremely good. Also the usual Kid Dynamite, I Am The Avalanche, Living With Lions, and Death Cab. Always lots of Death Cab.
If you haven’t already, check out Rust Belt Lights on Facebook, or on their current tour.
