EP REVIEW: Transitions - A Place In Time

Release Info:

A Place In Time - Transitions EP
Release Date: December 12th, 2012
Review by: Damo Musclecar

It’s ironic, just tonight I was having a marathon of episodes of The Wonder Years which was one of my favourite TV shows as I was growing up and then I was asked to review this EP by A Place In Time. How does that relate to The Wonder Years, I hear you ask. Well, The Wonder Years is not only one of the coolest TV shows but it’s also the name of one of pop punk’s most popular current bands, in case you lived in Bangladesh without internet and didn’t already know (which means you wouldn’t see this review anyway so forget this whole sentence). ANYWAY, that brings us to A Place In Time. These guys sound a lot like The Wonder Years. Like A LOT. In capitals and everything. This is by no means a bad thing though cos The Wonder Years are a great band and so are A Place In Time. This five track EP is packed full of harmonies, catchy sing-along anthems and some obscure riffage which kinda reminds me of the band Choke. Remember those guys? I think they were from Canada and played this unique style of Math Pop Punk (is that even a genre?). Anyway, their album was a hard one to stomach but this release sure isn’t. It’s short and sweet and gets to the point. Even though this took a few listens to get my head around the layers of sounds happening in each song, I still found these guys to be a solid upbeat band with strong songs filled with happy melodies. I can see them doing well for themselves and probably being played in Hot Topic while you shop for lip rings and spacers to stretch your ears. The tune Three Or Four Words is my pick of the bunch but they’re all worthy of your time. Thumbs up to these fellas.

EP REVIEW: Shane Henderson & The Future Perfect - Control

Release Info:

Shane Henderson & The Future Perfect - Control EP
Release Date: January 8th, 2013
Label: N/A

Reviewer: Audrey Henry

Control is the new EP from Shane Henderson and the Future Perfect. You might remember Shane Henderson from his former band, Valencia. I’d initially gone into listening to the EP with hopes of it sounding a lot like old Valencia with a twist, and was pleasantly surprised to find something entirely different. Control is definitely more heartfelt, and it seems like a lot of emphasis was placed on writing songs with strong lyrical bases and gentler instrumentals. There’s a noticeable folk-rock influence on this record, which was completely unheard of in Valencia.

This EP is definitely not Shane simply picking up where he left off in his previous band. While there’s still the same basic lyrical integrity, there are distinct differences in song composition and instrumentals. Control has a vibrant acoustic/folk feel to the majority of the tracks, and while there’s still a bit of the old magic when it comes to cohesiveness, the Valencia similarities stop there.

The first track starts off in what seems like standard acoustic fashion, and then gently transitions into a more upbeat folk sound, which sets the stage for the rest of the EP. All of the tracks erase any pretense that this new project will be anything like the sound you’re used to hearing from Shane Henderson while in Valencia. This record definitely grows on you with time. Even if you give it a first listen and think it isn’t necessarily your style, listening again will more than likely change your feelings. I myself am entirely guilty of listening to “Can We Get Away” and “I Can Feel A Change” more than once in succession.

In all, this record shows amazing artist growth, and maturity. It isn’t a traditional pop-punk record at all, but the brilliantly clear vocals more than make up for the genre switch.
